Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA) Paving. Cold mix asphalt is manufactured in pugmills which blend water-based asphalt emulsions with aggregates according to a laboratory designed job mix formula. The aggregates may be virgin, or reclaimed asphalt pavement (asphalt millings) may be used to produce a low cost paving material. Hot mix (warmer, drier weather) – For larger jobs, the economics of a full hot mix operation usually makes sense. The asphalt is mixed at degrees (Fahrenheit, degrees Celsius), then must be kept sufficiently hot while the application and compaction is complete. For the most part, it can only be applied when the ground itself is warm.

Getting the Right Asphalt Mix. There are a few different ways to mix asphalt, the most popular of which are hot and cold. Hot-mix asphalt is made by heating aggregates to decrease the viscosity of the binding agents and make the whole more fluid, then drying it to remove any remaining moisture.

It is mixed hot at degrees Fahrenheit. Warm-mix asphalt is the generic name of technologies that allow the producers of hot-mix asphalt pavement material to lower the temperatures at which the material is mixed and placed on the road.

Reductions of 50 to degrees Fahrenheit have been documented. Engineering and construction benefits include better compaction of pavements; the. Hot Mix Asphalt Materials, Mixture Design and Construction - Third Edition Brown, E. Ray and Prithvi S.

May 7, by Madison Paving. Hot Mix Asphalt is typically what one thinks of when installing driveways of new homes. It is by far one of the least expensive methods for paving a surface in new home construction sites.

Properly installed asphalt paved driveways have a life expectancy of about 25 years or more. Whether you need to clear up a pothole in ebook street, a driveway, or ebook parking lot, asphalt is the material that you will need in order to smooth your way.

When working with asphalt, it is important to know the different varieties that are available. There are three main types of asphalt: Hot Asphalt, MC Cold Mix, and UPM.
